A Little Something Extra For Your Window Treatments
Have you taken a look at your current window treatments and wondered if something is missing? Maybe you have recently installed some handsome blinds or curtains, but still feel like your décor lacks a certain punch. You have used paint as creatively as you can imagine and are still standing with arms akimbo, scratching your head and searching for that little something extra. The missing link might just be waiting for you in the world of window valances.
Each of your rooms probably has its own personality so you will need to decide what style of valance fits best. There are an abundance of valance styles from which to choose. From country charm to understated simple elegance to elaborate and ornate, there is something for every taste and design concept.
For an emphasis on the traditional elegance of a formal dining room, for example, you might consider the ascot valance. The fabric used is often more firm than for other valances. This can help create a clearly visible undulating effect. Further decorative accents can be added with tassels or fringing or many other touches. Often, furniture stores that specialize in classic furniture have showrooms or areas with this kind of exhibiting this kind of valance to emphasize the beauty of the furniture. Do some window shopping there to get some ideas.
If you want a romantic touch in a particular bedroom or dining area, you might think about a balloon valance. Like the name suggests, these are made with a fabric so as to create a billowy effect. This valance might fit well with renaissance décor or a bedroom full of antiques.
The swag valance is another option. With the swag, the fabric is essentially placed over the curtain rod so as to let the fabric loop slightly. The ends of the fabric hang down on the sides. The thickness of the material and the folds therein can be played with to create the desired look.
Scarf valances, fluted valances and pleated valances are among other styles to consider. You can purchase these in a number of different department stores. Or, for the gifted homemaker, a trip to the fabric store might be all you need to start you on your own valance making project.
Take the time to compare colors and textures and prices. Take a sample of the fabric home and make sure it meshes nicely with the existing elements of your interior decoration. Once you have decided which style fits your needs, you can finally add that missing element to your windows.

It amazes me how many different variations of window coverings there are nowadays. I have been contemplating doing some valances, but its just so hard to choose which to go with.
